The Canadian composer Zane Zalis grapples with one of the darkest chapters in German history with his Holocaust oratorio, “I believe.” And although this period in our history is an extremely difficult topic to address in art, Zalis succinctly portrays the development of the Holocaust and gives the victims a dignified voice, in the truest sense of the word. Transposed to a contemporary context, “I believe” is representative of the conflicts in our world in regard to totalitarian power, discrimination and racism. The sheer number of performers as well as the music, which follows expressiveness over any genre or style, do not miss in their effect, and the combination of music and lyric make something very special that stays with all who experience it. As it should be.
