The Munich Academy is rich with tradition and among the oldest art academies in Germany. Students there are still taught as a class led by a single professor. We are pleased that Pia Fries and her class accepted our invitation to exhibit at the Erholungshaus this year.
Pia Fries’ connection to the Rhineland is through art. After completing her studies in sculpture in Lucerne, Switzerland, she studied painting under Gerhard Richter in Düsseldorf, where she now lives and works. Her class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich is made up of young artists from around the world who work in a variety of mediums. The class sees the following as its greatest challenge: “In view of the growing need for art to justify itself in the face of morally charged demands for censorship to ensure “political correctness” on the one hand and of economic constraints on the other, how can art be perceived as, let alone lay claim to being, autonomous, based on what art history has taught us?”
Art students have the difficult task of orienting themselves in this charged environment and finding fulfillment both as producers of art and as individuals. For this, they need not only the opportunity to make art, but also the chance to prove themselves in the art world – to the institutions, the public, funding agencies, clients – in order to put themselves, their art, and also the teachers and institutions, to the test.
