HandsOn!

Children and young people accounted for a healthy 13 % of our audiences last season. Recognising the need to get involved in the cultural education of the younger generation, Bayer Arts & Culture has set itself the target of further increasing this percentage. We already offer a wide range of events for children and families, and almost 600 young people subscribe to our special programme for that age group. What has been lacking so far, however, is an educational offer to accompany the plays, concerts, dance performances and exhibitions. We have therefore created a new series of workshops, chats and other courses – to be held either in schools or in the Bayer Kulturhaus – that will provide children and young people with background information appropriate to their age and help them understand the events better.

We have succeeded in engaging the services of numerous artists experienced in working with children and young people. Most of the HandsOn! offers are linked to specific performances: for example, the fantastic puppeteer Neville Tranter will hold a workshop before his show, and the West German Radio (WDR) presenter Christian Schruff will explain to young computer freaks how the electronic music from computer games can be arranged for a symphony orchestra. We are particularly pleased that our stART protégés Hardy Rittner, the Signum Quartet and the Benjamin Schaefer Trio and our orchestra in residence l’arte del mondo unhesitatingly pledged their support.
As from November 2010 Christine Hellweg will be in charge of coordinating all these activities and will also conduct some of them herself. All teachers should contact Christine Hellwig if they have any questions concerning the organisation or content of the events.

The Four Seasons

There are countless things children can do to Vivaldi’s music – they can paint, dance, write poetry or act. Bayer Arts & Culture invites school classes and individual children to express, through different artistic media, what the music conveys to them. They can paint pictures which will be exhibited in the foyer of the Bayer Kulturhaus on the day of the actual concert, or they can make up a choreography to one of the seasons which will then be performed on stage during the concert.
Emilio Percan and his colleagues from l’arte del mondo are also willing to visit schools to talk to the children about the music and explain the particularities of performing on historical instruments.

How is a play produced?

How is a play produced? Where does the stage set come from? What does the director do? What happens at rehearsals? School classes can find out the answers to all these questions in the Bayer Kulturhaus in February and March, when rehearsals are taking place for Evil in the Lift – Why Orpheus Went All the Way Down. The children will be taken round the Bayer Kulturhaus, they can attend a rehearsal and talk to the actors afterwards. There is also to be a separate visit for individual children, the date of which will be announced in due course. Interested teachers should contact Christine Hellweg (0214.30-47452) to discuss a concept to suit their class.

Video shooting for Michael Jazzson

In connection with the Michael Jazzson concert, school classes and young individuals are invited to make videos relating to the different pieces of music that will be played. The best entries will be shown during the concert. The videos can be based on the lyrics, or be made up of images associated with the music, they can be representational or abstract – anything is allowed. The only condition is that the video must be the same length as the respective song so that it can be shown to the music.

The programme and MP3 files will be available from Bayer Arts & Culture after the summer holidays. The closing date for entries is April 30, 2012.

Creative writing

We are offering a writing workshop for young people on the subject of Knowledge and Belief. What do we know we believe, and what do we believe we know? Surely no other topic can be so expansive and yet so clearly delineated. Everything is possible, since there are no formal requirements as regards the text itself. The participants will work together on conceiving, researching and writing the text with the aim of producing a work that is good enough to be performed in public by a drama group.

Thorsten Nesch is a writer of books for young people and has been holding workshops and seminars for this target group for several years. His first novel Joyride Ost was nominated as “best German-language debut novel for young people” and is to be filmed.

Workshop with Thorsten Nesch
The number of participants is limited to 15.

MOVE ? art and dance since the 1960s
MOVE – art and dance since the 1960s
Trip to the Kunstsammlung NRW

Why should dance enthusiasts want to go to a museum? Isn’t that boring and far too static? The exhibition MOVE – art and dance since the 1960s is dedicated to the interaction between art and dance. Dancers and performers activate the works shown and encourage visitors to touch the equipment and installations, try them out and play with them. It is only through this movement that the works of art become complete, and then they are as transitory as any performance that is over, gone for ever, as soon as the curtain falls. This trip and the accompanying programme will appeal to young people who want to find out about the origins of contemporary dance and the huge influence that the dancers and choreographers of the time had on music and the visual arts.
