l'arte del mondo
We thought long and hard last year for a name that would adequately describe our close cooperation with l’arte del mondo, as we felt that “orchestra in residence” did not cover all the facets of the orchestra’s role. In the end, however, we came to the conclusion that there is no succinct title that really hits the mark, and so we decided to stick with “orchestra in residence”.

A residency generally lasts six months, or a year at most, but our cooperation with l’arte del mondo is intended as a long-term partnership. The orchestra under its artistic director Werner Ehrhardt rehearses and performs in the Bayer Kulturhaus, records CDs there, is involved in our educational HandsOn! programme and now also has its offices just round the corner.

The potential benefits of this cooperation for Bayer Arts & Culture were evident right from the very start: at the festive opening of its first season as orchestra in residence, the ensemble performed with singers Ruth Ziesak and Florin Cezar Ouatu; they accompanied the celebrated soloists Daniel Hope and Andrea Keller in the chamber concerts; they played Joseph Mysliveček’s Medonte at the premiere of Bayer Arts & Culture’s new series of Operas from the World Archives, which was staged in cooperation with the WDR 3 radio series “Alte Musik in NRW” and was recorded on CD under the SONY label (first recording worldwide); and they accompanied ECHO Klassik prize-winner and stART pianist Hardy Rittner on a historic Erard grand piano in Johannes Brahms’ Concerto No. 1 in D minor for piano and orchestra – the first time this work had been recorded on historic instruments anywhere in the world. On each occasion, the members of l’arte del mondo demonstrated that they are musicians, heart and soul, who immediately infect audiences with their spirited playing and obvious delight in music. Their debut performances at the Berliner Philharmonie and major concert halls in Brazil were a resounding success. l’arte del mondo is well on the way to world fame – and Bayer Arts & Culture is accompanying them on their journey.

The ensemble is involved in six very special projects in the course of the 2011/12 season: the performance at the festive opening of an unknown work by Christoph Graupner (born 1683); a chamber concert with the internationally renowned harpist Xavier de Maistre; Pasquale Anfossi’s La finta giardiniera as the second in our series of Operas from the World Archives; a symphony concert with the star violinist Viktoria Mullova (who will use catgut strings specially for l’arte del mondo); Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for schoolchildren in the HandsOn! and -8+x series; and last but not least, the most important project in this season devoted to Knowledge and Belief: George Frederick Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt with Yair Dalal, his Israeli/Arab ensemble and the Tölzer Knabenchor as a musical plea for tolerance and peaceful co-existence between the world religions. This ambitious project is a coproduction between Bayer Arts & Culture, the International Handel Festival Halle and the Israel Festival Jerusalem and is being sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia. www.lartedelmondo.de
