Fresh start and refurbishment
The building was originally planned as a gym and initially also housed a public reading room. The theatre was refurbished after a fire in 1975 and reopened two years later. In 1992 the ticket office of the Bayer Cultural Affairs Department moved into the redesigned foyer. The auditorium, exhibition area and foyer underwent conversion work in 1997. The Erholungshaus adjoins a small park that Bayer laid out before World War I. In summer, visitors can enjoy refreshments in the beer garden.
