Carl Duisberg, 1861–1935, was one of the most remarkable figures in the history of the Bayer Group. He was managing director of the company from 1912 to 1925. One of his greatest achievements was the development of the Leverkusen site. In addition, he was Chairman of the Reichsverband der Deutschen Industrie (Reich Federation of German Industry) for many years, and was involved in numerous business associations and scientific societies. He was also in contact with eminent contemporaries. Numerous photographs and letters testify to his lively correspondence with, for example, Paul von Hindenburg, Konrad Adenauer, Gustav Krupp von Bohlen-Halbach, and the writers Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann. These roughly 20,000 letters are among the most important historical sources in the company archives.
