With over 80 musicians, the Bayer Symphony Orchestra is a fully-fledged symphony orchestra. Concert tours regularly take them around Germany and the neighbouring countries. Since the beginning of 2008 the orchestra has been conducted by Kenneth Duryea, currently principal conductor and deputy musical director at the Vereinigte Städtische Bühnen Krefeld & Mönchengladbach. Born in New Jersey, USA, Duryea studied piano and conducting at the prestigious Julliard School in New York. He came to Germany in 1981 to take up his first appointment at the Städtische Bühnen Bielefeld and has since occupied positions at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the Saarländische Staatstheater Saarbrücken and the Bremer Theater.

The Bayer Symphony Orchestra’s repertoire includes classical and Romantic music as well as works by modern composers such as Stravinsky, Lutoslavski and Britten.

It attaches special importance to encouraging young musicians and regularly offers talented youngsters an opportunity to gain orchestral experience under professional guidance. Many of these talented youngsters now play in major orchestras from Munich to Copenhagen and Oslo.
